CHAD OLSON: WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, DOESN'T ALWAYS STAY IN VEGAS!
While the popularity of video on demand and streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon continue to grow, the masses still agree that the best way to experience a movie is where the director intended it to be seen - in a movie theatre. The proof is in the global box office which reached a record high of $40.6 billion in 2017, according to the MPAA’s latest theatrical market statistics report.
Movies are big business which is why every spring, film studios make the trek to Las Vegas for CinemaCon, a 4-day event specifically for industry insiders and press, where studios showcase their upcoming product. The studio presentations are increasingly elaborate, often bringing in the filmmakers and talent to premiere never-before-seen footage and trailers from the year’s upcoming releases.
The Nemer Fieger movie team looks forward to CinemaCon every year for the opportunity to meet up with our studio clients and this year was especially exciting! One of the many highlights was Universal Pictures presentation that kicked-off with Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart walking through The Colosseum auditorium at Caesars Palace, passing out champagne bottles and encouraging people to drink and pass it down. Tiffany claimed she was helping cure hangovers with a little “hair of the dog.” While on stage, Tiffany and Kevin announced they will star together not only in the upcoming NIGHT SCHOOL but also in THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2.
The cast of FIRST MAN were the first to present film footage. Director Damien Chazelle, Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy took the stage with a first look at the bio-drama about the first man to walk on the moon. THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS followed, with stars Jack Black and Cate Blanchett debuting footage from the kid-friendly mystery opening in theatres September 21.
Terror filled the air when THE FIRST PURGE producer Jason Blum and director Gerard McMurray showed footage from the film opening nationwide on July 4. Attendees were kept on the edge of their seats as Jamie Lee Curtis shared new footage from the upcoming October 19th release of HALLOWEEN where she plays Laurie Strode, a role she first played when was 19-years-old.
The presentation continued with Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, James McAvoy and Sarah Paulson delighting CinemaCon attendees when they joined M. Night Shyamalan on stage to provide a first look at GLASS, opening in January 2019. Those clips were followed by JURASSIC WORLD stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard being joined on stage by the Chairman of Universal Pictures Donna Langley, to share an extended look at JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM opening June 22.
The Universal Pictures presentation closed with a big surprise that had CinemaCon buzzing. MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN star Amanda Seyfried introduced clips from the July 20th release, which concluded with the icon Cher taking the stage to sing ABBA’s hit, “Fernando.” The Universal Pictures presentation was amazing and left the Nemer Fieger movie team even more inspired and proud to represent them for over two decades.
